Core glass in double glazed windows and doors

TuffCo manufacture custom Double Glazed Units (DGUs) using computer automated DGU line technology. Each DGU has two sheets of glass sealed together, separated by a spacer bar.

Compared to single layer, float glass, DGUs offer increased solar, thermal and acoustic efficiency across a range of residential and commercial applications, and environments.

DGUs are the glass component of double glazed windows and doors.

Float and laminate glass options

We can manufacture custom DGUs to your specifications using float or laminate glass from our line of stocked glasses, including float and laminate glasses, and performance float and performance laminate glasses designed for Australian conditions.

DGU specifications

We can manufacture custom IGUs to your specifications up to a maximum of 2500mm x 3000mm in size, or 2100mm x 3000mm when using toughened glass.

How to calculate the minimum thickness for an DGU spacer

It is recommended to divide the smallest length by 150 and round to the the nearest whole number.

For example:

The minimum space width for an 2000mm X 1850mm DGU is 1850 ÷ 150 = 12.33 = 12mm

What is the weight of a glass panel in kilograms?

A panel’s weight is equal to the thickness, multiplied by the total square metres, multiplied by 2.5

For example:

A 12mm sheet of glass that is 2000mm x 3000mm weighs = 12 x 2 x 3 x 2.5 = 180kg

Toughening limits with thin glass types

Limits vary by furnace manufacturer and model. For our Newcastle and Coffs Harbour furnaces the following is a good guide:

Minimum size 350mm for 4mm
250mm for all other sizes across diagonal
Maximum aspect ratio 15.1, e.g., a 1500mm in length equates to minimum width of 100mm
Refer to detailed specifications for limits on holes, cut-outs and notches.
